Update Your Winder Workout with Exercise

Heading indoors for winter? Liven up your workout routine with these activities.

1. Dress the Part
Don't give up on the outdoors—simply take the proper precautions to stay warm. Invest in workout gear that wicks away sweat from your skin to help you keep warm, or dress in layers you can shed if you get hot. And try the "20-degree rule"—dress as if it's 20 degrees warmer than it actually is—that way you won't become too hot when you really get moving.

2. Become a Class Act
Try a new kind of indoor workout class: Instead of the usual step aerobics or yoga, try a salsa dance class, kickboxing, or Pilates.

3. Hit the Library
Rent a new workout DVD or video at the local library to vary your routine. Try a new one each time you return the last.

4. Get Off the Couch
Set up your treadmill so you can get a workout while you watch your favorite winter shows. Don't have a treadmill? Do leg lifts, sit-ups, and other exercises while you watch.

5. Take Advantage of Snow
If you live in a part of the country that sees a lot of cold weather or snow, take advantage of it. Try ice skating, snowshoeing, or snowboarding.

6. Start Groovin'
Music can enliven your whole workout routine. Infuse your iPod or Walkman® with music that will get you in the mood. Try www.workoutmusic.com or www.powermusic.com for ideas.

7. Get In the Game
Almost every organized sport can be played indoors, so gather a bunch of friends and get a team together. Look to community sports leagues or the YMCA to get involved.

8. Join a Local Gym
Gyms offer a wide variety of workout equipment, classes, and even personal trainers who can help ensure you stay motivated all season long.
